Joanna Benecke is a versatile screenwriter with a particular focus on diverse female-driven scripts.
She has worked in film and TV since she was a teenager, firstly as an actor and voice-over artist while growing up in Sweden, later as a screenwriter and film journalist in the UK and US. She was Director’s Assistant to Bernard Rose (Candyman, Immortal Beloved) on the film Mr Nice.
She co-wrote UK rom-com Bonobo (starring InterTalent client Josie Lawrence and James Norton), which premiered at Raindance, where it was nominated for Best British Feature.
In 2015 her LGBTQI teen-comedy script Be Normal (formerly So Gay) was selected for the Outfest Screenwriting Lab in LA. In 2016 Be Normal reached the semi-finals of the Academy’s Nicholl Fellowship, as well as winning second place in Stage32’s Feature Film Script Competition. Her other scripts have placed in various competitions, such as AFF and Screen craft. Be Normal has been picked up for production by producer Stephen Israel (Swimming with Sharks, G.B.F.).
Joanna was the film editor of DIVA Magazine (Europe’s leading magazine for the lesbian and bi community) from 2013-2015. She has also written on film for the Guardian, focusing on LGBTQI and female-driven movies, and is the author of a number of books, including Amazon biography bestseller 100 Reasons to Love Ryan Gosling.
Joanna is based between Cambridge, Stockholm & LA, and holds an O1 visa for the USA.
